4/08/10NEW YORK (Reuters) – The euro edged higher versus the dollar on Thursday, erasing early losses, after European Central Bank president Jean-Claude Trichet said Greece was not in danger of defaulting on its debt.
Trichet commented at his monthly news conference after the ECB left rates at a record low of 1 percent. [ID:nLDE6361AJ]
The euro rose as high as $1.3352 EUR=, according to Reuters data, and last traded at $1.3343, flat on the day.
“Optimistic statements from ECB President Trichet in the press conference that default in Greece is not an issue and that the Greek aid plan is workable helped boost demand for the euro,” said Michael Malpede, an analyst at Easy Forex in Chicago. “It may have calmed some of the jitters by investors over the Greek debt situation.” (Editing by Jeffrey Benkoe)
